<p>After almost 20 years as an assistant coach, Johnny Hill has gotten the call to head his own program.</p>
<p>Hill on Monday was named the Plainview Lady Bulldogs' new head softball coach, replacing Stan Countryman after he left to take a similar job at Lubbock Estacado.</p>
<p>&quot;I'm looking forward to it,&quot; the 46-year-old Hill said.</p>
<p>Plainview Athletic Director Marcos Hinojos said the job drew seven applicants and Hill was &quot;the best option&quot; for the program.</p>
<p>&quot;He has the experience, is certified and he's from Plainview and has a passion for Plainview. Those things are very important to me,&quot; Hinojos said. &quot;Having one of his kids go through that program, it's pretty special to Johnny.&quot;</p>
<p>Lauren Hill was an all-district and All-South Plains shortstop for the Lady Dogs last season. She's since graduated, receiving a softball scholarship from Lubbock Christian University.</p>
<p>Hill might be better known as a baseball coach as he spent eight years as an assistant in that sport when his son, Chris, was playing. A designated hitter and third baseman, Chris graduated in 2009 and now is a math education major at Texas Tech.</p>
<p>Johnny Hill made the move to softball last season, in part so he could watch Lauren compete during her senior season.</p>
<p>&quot;Marcos allowed me to do that,&quot; he said.</p>
<p>Hill also played baseball - a first and third baseman - at PHS, graduating in 1981. He graduated from West Texas State University with a degree in life and earth sciences and health/P.E.</p>
<p>He served as director of community service at the Amarillo YMCA for five years before beginning his teaching/coaching career in Plainview in 1991. He served as junior high alternative education instructor at the Houston School campus for 15 years before joining the staff at PHS as a health teacher four years ago.</p>
<p>Besides baseball and softball, Hill also has coached track and football, and he'll continue coaching ninth grade football.</p>
<p>As for softball, Hill is excited that he'll have assistant coaches Mike Stephenson and Rene Kayler returning.</p>
<p>&quot;We work very well together,&quot; he said. &quot;We basically read each other's thoughts, so it's a plus to have them still around.&quot;</p>
<p>Stephenson's daughter, Gwen, played second base as a freshman last season for PHS. Hill said she also will pitch this season, taking up slack for Tina Romero, who graduated along with third baseman Tiffany DeLuna, first baseman Corinna Chavez and Lauren Hill. All four will be playing in college, Hill and DeLuna at LCU and Chavez and Romero at Frank Phillips Junior College in Borger.</p>
<p>&quot;We have six returning starters,&quot; Johnny Hill said as he looks to continue a two-year playoff run for a program in its 12th year. Plainview lost to Canyon in bi-district both seasons, in two games in 2009 and in three games last season.</p>
<p>The Lady Dogs will be joining Canyon in the same district starting next season as Plainview moves into a northern league.</p>
<p>&quot;I expect us to be up there pretty even with Frenship, Randall and Canyon as the top teams in the district,&quot; Hill predicted.</p>
<p>As for his field philosophy, Hill said he's a &quot;defensive person&quot; and a &quot;disciplinarian. We're going to be fundamentally sound defensively and offensively. We'll either play small ball or play long ball. We made progress last year with both, and we see how it paid off.&quot;</p>
<p>Hill's wife, Pat, is a teacher at Edgemere Elementary where she's served the past 20 years. The couple also has another son, Aaron, who works for the Texas Department of Corrections here.</p>
