Rayburn fine-tunes its game vs Sterling

Date: Aug 23, 2010 From: Pasadena Sam Rayburn

A 12-play scoring drive and a pair of interceptions in the end zone by Sam Rayburn’s defense highlighted the Texans’ scrimmage with Baytown Sterling at Newcomb Field Friday night.

One week before Rayburn kicks off its 47th season of high school football, the Texans coaching staff also saw its 4-3 defense recover a Rangers fumble in the end zone, following a poor snap from center when Sterling was in the shotgun formation.

But the Rangers got in their share of licks too. Excluding touchdowns when the two teams practiced in the red zone, Baytown Sterling found the end zone four times to Rayburn’s two.

The scrimmage ended with a simulated two quarters of a live game with a running clock. Sam Rayburn and quarterback Agustin Velasquez needed just four plays to guide the team 65 yards to paydirt. In shotgun formation, the three-year letterman connected for a 25-yard pass before the running game netted the next 31. The six points arrived with a 9-yard toss.

But Baytown Sterling answered in equally lightning-like speed. It too needed just four plays to travel 65 yards for the tying touchdown. A 43-yard run on first down chewed up most of the distance.

Sterling then snapped the tie with just 90 seconds remaining in the two quarters as the Rangers completed 5-of-6 passes for 62 yards. The go-ahead score came on a 14-yard pass.

Rayburn’s first score of the scrimmage was the result of that 12-play drive. Using their third quarterback of the night, the Texans marched 70 yards, reserving it all for the running game and a facemask call against the Rangers.

Rayburn overcame a second down and 16 situation when the running game produced 36 yards over the next two plays, depositing the team on the 12. The Texans finished the drive by moving the chains on a fourth-down play and scoring from five yards out on third down.

Junior returning letterman Jesus Aquayo handed Sterling its biggest loss of yardage on the night with a quarterback sack.

From here on out, it’s for real. Sam Rayburn will oppose Summer Creek, the 1-year-old school in Humble ISD this Friday night at 7:30 at Turner Stadium.
