Buckaroos cash in big with rushing game
October 29, 2010

BRECKENRIDGE — The good news for the Eastland Mavericks is that they rolled up 461 yards in total offense in Friday’s Big Country Game of the Week.

The bad news is, they gave up 411 yards rushing to Breckenridge’s wildcat offense, and tossed in four turnovers in a 42-21 loss at Buckaroo Stadium.

Zeke Smith rushed for 211 yards and Vance Sullivan rushed for 165 more to lead Breckenridge (7-2, 4-1 District 4-2A D-I), which clinched a second place finish in the league race with the win.

Eastland, which got 387 yards passing and three touchdowns from Trent Brittain, finished the regular season at 7-3 and 4-2.

Breckenridge used a dominating effort from its offensive line and solid reads from Sullivan at the quarterback spot to consistently punch holes through the Maverick defense. This led to more than 280 yards rushing before the half for the Bucks, who completed only one pass on the night — a 12-yard toss from Sullivan to Colby Hartfield in the first half.

“It was a big key for us and it’s been a big key for us all year long,” said Breckenridge coach Steve Freeman of his team’s offensive execution. “We don’t worry about passing percentages, but we have to make it count when we do throw. (Eastland) is a good football team and we knew coming in turnovers would be a factor.”

As it turned out, it was a game-breaking factor.

Trailing 21-7 at the break, Eastland appeared ready to make a game of it when it pushed 65 yards in seven plays to open the scoring in the second half with a 15-yard scoring pass from Brittain to Josh Lowrance.

From that point forward, however, the game became a story of Eastland mistakes, and the dominance of the Buckaroos offensive line.

Three second-half turnovers wrecked the Eastland effort — with two of them leading to Breckenridge scores.

Breckenridge took a 28-7 lead with 2:45 left in the third when Smith scored from 11 yards out —the first of three straight Buckaroo touchdowns that put the game away.

A 25-yard touchdown run by Smith with 0:25 left in the third gave the Bucks a three-score lead, after which Hartfield ended the competitive phase of the game with an 89-yard fumble return at the 8:49 mark of the fourth quarter.

“Breckenridge is big, strong, physical with 26 seniors and they come right at you,” Eastland coach Brian Hulett said of the Breckenridge wildcat attack. “It’s what they do, and they’re good at it.”

Eastland’s final gasp came at the 3:04 mark of the fourth quarter when Brittain found Caleb Hullum streaking down the right sideline for a 73-yard scoring pass.

Brittain finished 24-of-32 on the night with three interceptions to match his three touchdown passes. He also rushed 11 times, producing 45 of the Mavericks’ 74 rushing yards.

“We had some turnovers and a crucial penalty that killed a drive,” Hulett said. “When you have four turnovers, you’re not going to win a game like this.”
