Dublin squeaks by Santo, 10-7
September 14, 2012

DUBLIN — Dirk DeVries took over in the second half and Dublin won consecutive games for the first time since 2006 on homecoming night Friday at Memorial Stadium.

The junior running back/receiver rushed for 113 yards on 25 carries, including 94 on 18 trips in the second half. He began the third quarter with five carries for 51 yards to set up Dublin's lone touchdown.

Senior quarterback Clay Francis finished the drive with a five-yard strike to Jimmy Aguilar in traffic, and DeVries rushed for the two-point conversion to put Dublin ahead 8-7.

DeVries' sixth punt backed Santo up to its own 8 in the fourth, and a pitch on an option play was fumbled. Santo covered the ball in the end zone for a safety, putting Dublin up 10-7 with 2:53 to go.

A fumble in the third quarter hurt Santo even worse as quarterback Zane Mauney was fighting to reach the goal line after a big gain on an option keeper. Dublin's Ozzy Kendall stripped the ball at the Lion 1 and Dublin covered it in the end zone for a turnover and a touchback.

Santo lost two of its seven fumbles while committing 12 penalties for 95 yards. Two promising first half drives were stalled by penalties, though a four-yard Bridger Seay touchdown run did put the Wildcats up 7-0 at the break.

Dublin also missed out on a first-half scoring opportunity. DeVries took a pass from Francis and gained 28 yards to the Santo 8 before being stripped and turning the ball over with eight seconds left in the half.
